Portable Lightweight Wheelchair Ramp

As part of a senior capstone project at The Ohio State University, my team and I designed a Portable Lightweight Wheelchair Ramp to address mobility challenges for wheelchair users. This innovative assistive device was tailored to allow individuals or their assistants to load unoccupied wheelchairs into vehicles, such as vans, without requiring heavy lifting or complex setup. Our design prioritized accessibility, portability, and ease of use while meeting rigorous safety standards.

The ramp was engineered to support weights up to 500 lbs, accommodating both motorized and non-motorized wheelchairs. It featured a lightweight design (20-25 lbs) for easy handling, edge guards for safety, and a friction-enhanced surface to prevent slippage in wet conditions. The ramp’s dimensions ensured compatibility with a wide range of wheelchairs while being compact enough for convenient storage in vehicles.

Through a systematic design process, we evaluated concepts such as scissoring and telescoping mechanisms and used materials like aluminum for a balance of strength and weight. The project demonstrated a practical solution to mobility barriers, blending engineering innovation with a commitment to improving users' quality of life.
